I like to use Inkscape to make my basic cartoon drawings. Inkscape is an open-source graphic software. Which means it's free to use. Sometimes, I use an online Inkscape drawing app if I'm not at my home computer.
We'll use the calligraphy and brush strokes tool. The settings that I use are in the instruction sheet at the bottom of the post.
If you're making the digital version, make sure that your settings on the calligraphy tool match mine before starting.
Draw a Thanksgiving Turkey Step by Step
For the first step, we're going to make a large hand drawn circle and then a smaller hand drawn circle
Draw a large circle shape. This will be the turkey body.
See the picture below.
Next, draw a small circle above the first circle. This will be the turkey head.
Draw a line to connect the circles on the left side and another line to connect the circles on the right side.
The three of these shapes make the base of the turkey.
You can download the template to help you make the base of the turkey.
Draw the Turkey Wattle
To finish the turkey head, we still need to add a wattle. That's the red thing that hangs under the turkey's chin.
Starting from below the turkey head, draw the number 3 and repeat this step.
Draw a line from top to bottom to close the number 3 shapes.
If you are making a digital drawing, make sure to close any gaps. This will make it easier to color the drawing using the fill bucket tool.
Draw the Turkey Wings
The base of the turkey is complete. Let's move onto how to draw turkey wings.
If you are following the digital instructions, an easy way to make turkey wings is to use the letter "W" as a base for making the wings.
Pro Tip: If you are making a simple free hand drawing with paper and pencil, you could draw the turkey wings with your hand. Just put your hand down on the paper (your hand is on top of the turkey head) and trace around your hand.
To continue with the digital instructions, draw a "W" shape on either side of the turkey's neck.
To do this, find the midpoint of the turkey neck and draw two "W" lines on the left side of the neck and another two "W" lines on the right side of the neck.
This will be the middle of the turkey wings.
Starting at the left side, draw a diagonal line going down to the left.
From the top of the right turkey wing, draw a diagonal line from the body (the big circle) up to the "W" and passed the height of the turkey head.
Repeat this step on the right side of the body.
These are the edges of the turkey wings.
We're ready to connect the wings.
Start by drawing a curved line from the left edge to the top of the next "W".
Then, draw another curved line from top of the W to the next W.
Repeat this process until you get to the right turkey wing.
Once you've drawn all of the curved lines, you shold see the finished outline of the turkey wings.
How to Draw a Turkey Head
Let's make a face for the turkey head.
Draw a small circle on the left side of the turkey head.
Draw a small circle on the right side of the turkey head.
These are the eyes.
Draw an upside-down triangle in the middle of the head.
This is the turkey beak.
How to Draw Turkey Legs
Woohoo, we're almost done. All that's left to draw are the turkey legs or rather turkey feet.
Draw two parallel lines down from the left side of the body.
Now, connect the two lines with a curly line (sort of like a number 3 turned on its side).
Do the same thing on the right side.
The turkey drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.
Coloring the Turkey Drawing
You're ready to color your drawing of a turkey.
To do this, use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool). Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).
If you have gaps, double click on the gap, zoom in and pull the nodes to close the gap. Watch the video to see how I did this.
Click the fill bucket tool and then click on a color from the color menu bar at the bottom of the screen. I'll choose a brown color as my fill color. This is so that we can still see the face and wing details, which were done in black. Make it fun by choosing bright colors.
Next, click on a section of the turkey to fill it with color.
Repeat this process to color in every section of the turkey.
