Easy Crochet Poncho That Looks Like a Granny Square

Here is a crochet granny stitch square poncho pattern to help keep you comfy in the upcoming spring and summer weather. Between the cotton and open stitch pattern, this crocheted poncho allows for a nice breeze to prevent you from overheating in the warmer weather, while adding a nice touch of warmth.

The Stitch Pattern for the Granny Poncho

For this crochet pattern, I used the granny stitch, but with a few chains in between the double crochets to give you a nice open lace for the summer, or for any season. The poncho is started at the neckline and worked down, making it super easy to crochet this to any length that you like.

The first round is worked with single crochet stitches. Then the granny stitch is worked with three double crochet stitches and a chain two throughout the pattern. The poncho is increased at each corner to maintain a nice square shape. Then for the final round, another round of single crochets are worked.

The entire pattern is worked from the right, so you have a nice clean fabric on the right side.

Available Size

Instructions are given for one size, adult small-medium. But basic instructions are provided on how to modify the neckline for a custom fit by increasing or decreasing the starting chains. As for the length, you simply continue to crochet until you have reached a desired length from child to adult.

Choose DK Cotton Yarn for a Summer Poncho

I used a DK weight yarn called Nurture by Euro Baby with a 4 mm hook size. It's a soft textured cotton, and results in a beautiful drape for the poncho. It is perfect for summer projects, baby projects and just about anything you have in mind. I purchased mine here at YarnCandyBargains.

The yarn works well with a 4 mm crochet hook. And yarn that works with the hook, or gives you a similar gauge should work to substitute.

With that said, you could probably substitute with just about any yarn as the poncho is easy to adjust to accommodate a different yarn. For the winter, choose an acrylic or even a wool material to help keep you warmer.

Just remember that you want to have a nice drape for the poncho, so keep that in mind if you make substitutions.

Blocking the Crocheted Simple Granny Square Poncho

You will definitely want to block this poncho to bring out the pretty stitches. Not only that, blocking also helps to improve the drape!

To block this, I wet mine down and then laid it flat on the floor on a blanket and let it dry. You can use pins to hold it in place as it dries. It's a big square project, so you need a lot of space in the middle or off to the side of the room to give you enough space for blocking.

• Gauge: 8 sc = 2".
• Finished Size: Neck circumference is approximately 25". From neckline down is about 19". The poncho is worked in the round like a square blanket with a hole (neck opening) in the middle. Each side measures approximately 45" after blocking.

• This poncho pattern is easy to adjust in size from neckline to the final length.
• The neckline is adjusted in a multiple of 20. Then make necessary adjustments in Rnd 2 for the corners to be evenly spaced out.
